After posting yesterday we headed out for a picnic on the green outside the musuem and art gallery complex, surrounded by seagulls. The WA Art Gallery wasn't exactly a patch on the Tate, but instead focused on more local exhibitions. There was one excellent room recommended by a few people we've spoken to; a show of a collection of Year 12 final pieces from Art courses across the country. Year 12 in Oz is the final compulsory school year, and so much of the work on display was excellent, not only impressively executed but really ambitious too, and very thought-provoking. Liam's favourite was 'Koko The Clown', http://www.awaag.org.au/images/agwa_davis.jpg e went to a grill restaurant in the centre of Northbridge on the night called The Brass Monkey, and blew a day's budget on a damn good roo steak - an iconic Australian dish. Yummy too!
Today, our day was initially intended on visiting the city museum, but Claire's shopping took a little longer than anticipated... so that was put off for another day :) We booked a trip this morning to visit Rottnest Island on Tuesday (finally getting our bums into gear and being active holiday-makers again) and deciding on an action-packed plan for next week - including agreeing to go for skydiving either this week or when we're in Sydney, EXCITING!
We had a walk along Swan River, past the ferris wheel which looks strangely similar to the one in Nottingham. The skyline here is compact but still impressive - and one of the buildings offers a revolving restaurant 30 floors up, which we hear is expensive for 'high tea' but not bad for cocktails. We also saw a couple of dolphins in the river! And lots of jellyfish too, nice. One the walk back to the city 2 women started walking directly towards us... it was Justine and Kelly - Ness's friends who were staying round! We had a big catchup and recommended a place which did really yummy blueberry muffins by the waterside.
On the evening we tried an Indian vegetarian restuarant near the waterside - with an unconventional twist - no prices or bills! It was a buffet operating system, where you could eat as much as you wanted, and pay as much as you thought it was worth. I imagine some people would feast and just walk out paying only a dollar or so, but apparently this setup had worked successfully for years, and it was heaving. The food was pretty good, we gave about $10 each.
