After 14 hours of a bumpy, squeeky, hold onto something train ride we finally made it to Chiang Mai.It wasn't actually too bad considering, the seats pulled into bunk beds (designedfor small people only - as Dave soon found out!), and you got a curtain surrounding your bed for privacy - well not private enough, when the lights get turned on at 5.30 am and the waitress woman walks up and down the cabin shouting "MORNING!!!".
When we eventually surfaced to get washed and dressed in a cramped smelly carriage after no sleep it realy couldn't get any better, especially when the shower gel has leaked all over the bags, toohbrushes, wash stuff and clothes you are just about to put on...it's so much fun to clean that up on a moving train.
After being bomarded by touts, we gota tuk-tuk from the station to our booked guest house (E-mailed to confirm and everything!) to find out they had no record of the booking??? After a 14 hour journey with about 2 hours sleep between us and having spent the last hour up to our necks in shower gel, this piece of news topped the morning off completley!
We managed to check into a guest house further up the street and after a hard sell by the woman on reception webooked, almost straight away, onto a Thai cooking course for tomorrow. When speaking with the man who teaches the course on the phone, all we were told was to bring a pen, a camera and an empty stomach!
We had a wander round Chiang Mai having a look at the area - first impresions... like it - so much more chilled out than Bangkok! We had some tea that according to the menu were 'the best burgers in South East Asia' so that's one achievement so far!
Tired from having so little sleep the night before aboard the 'sleeper' train we got an early night in our £3 each luxury guest house!
