Finally we are in Brazil!! And the HEAT! I love it!
We came in from Iguazu a 19 hour bus journey, which wasnt too bad, but we arrived at 6:30am! Killer! I hate getting to places that early because normally theres no1 about and you have to wander aimlessly before you figure out where you are.. Plus im always shattered! But Sao Paulo was ramo! Even at 6:30! There were people everywhere! I suppose its a shock because we are so used to going to fairly small places and the Argentina's didnt like to get out of bed until 9am at the earliest! Haha!
So we found the hostel fairly easily but ohhh boy is Sao Paulo big! It has apparentely over 1330 bus routes!! And more skyscrapers than you can count!
We decided that we would go and explore the city on the first day just because we only had three days here and it really is HUGE!
So off we went with what turned out to be the WORST map in the history of maps! Nothing linked up! I swear they just stuck pics of buildings (the historic things you shouldnt miss) abywhere near where they might be on a map and let you guess the rest! It was a nightmare! And we all know Tom isnt the best map reader on this trip! Haha!
We found everything thou, or at least we think we did!
First stop was the Santander Building.. Yes the bank. No we didnt stop there to get money out. You could go up to the top of it and because of its height you can see marjority of the city.. WOW! Sao Paulo really does have more skyscrapers than you can count! It is huge! All you can see for miles is skyscrapers and concrete! It was amazing views!
We then wandered down to the Mercado Municipal- a foodies dream! There was sooo much fruit it was unbelievable! Soo many different colours! I didnt know what to eat first!! We were also told to have a Pastel whilst we were in this market because it is apparentely really nice.. Hmm matter of opinion.. Its just deep fried pastry with a filling.. I had fish and it was disgusting! They sure do love their olives round here! It was ram packed with them! I wasnt impressed!! Ha! So after a distarious lunch i decided to have some fruit instead! Well i got well and truly ripped off there! £7 for some Cherries! And i dont mean a lot.. More like 20 cherries! Not even a puntet at home! Grr! :-/
After an expensive lunch we headed to Edificio Italia.. Another skyscraper but higher than the Santander building.. 41 floors.. It had a resturant at the top but judging by the suits that were eating in there we definately wouldnt have been able to afford it! Ha! The view was incredible thou! And it was soo warm!
On our second night we decided to go to this famous resturant! Where apparentely the Margritta pizza was created first! It was called Speranza and is situated in a former brothel.. Naaiicce! Ha! The pizza was incredible! I dont know whether id say the best in the world but a very close second!! But omg it was expensive..! £20 per pizza!! Glad we went but wouldnt ever spend that on pizza again!! Ha!
So after the uber expensive pizza we headed to this festival thing that was on in the same street as the pizza place.. It was so so busy! Literally couldnt move for people.. And there was stall after stall of food.. For cheaps. School boy on the pizza! Ha! We wandered down and headed to this one stall to get a drink and this woman shouts over to us.. 'are you from here' we were like clearly not.. The only blonde people in the place! Anyway she waves us over and puts a tv camera in our face and starts asking us questions about Brazil.. First off it was did we know anything about (and she names the festival which i cant remember now!) We said no. Then it was do you know Portuguese.. We said no. Well actually we told her we knew what hello and goodbye and thank you.. Haha! Then she asked if we'd eaten here.. We hadnt but felt like we'd let the woman down enough with our questions so we lied and said we had, had spaghetti.. And that it was the best spaghetti i had ever tasted.. She then asked if we'd been to Italy.. We said no.. But then blagged that everyone rave about Sao Paulo not Italy for pasta!! Ahahaha! She did actually believe us to! Haha! Then she asked us if we knew any Italian.. Tom asked her if she did, she said no so we said Carpe deim.. Hahaha! Still got absolutely no idea whether that is Italian.. I nearly said Dolmino hahaha! HILARIOUS! We have no idea whether it was live tv but it sure was funny! We then wandered aroud the market and saw all their version of fair ground games.. And there was this one. And it was priceless. A stack of cans and all you had to do was kick them over.. Easy. You werent even 10yards from the thing. But everybody missed.. It was Hilarious! They didnt just miss by an inch they skied the thing.. Missed the cage.. They were dreadful! We couldnt believe it.. I thought the Brazilians were incredible at football! Clearly no talent came from Sao Paulo!
We obviously went shopping whilst we were here.. How can you not.. And we onviously brought the Havaianas flip flops.. We went to the official shop which was soo cool..! We spent ages choosing colours etc! Soo much fun!
And because it was sooo hot we wandered down to their version of Hyde Park.. It was soo nice. A massive lake in the middle surrounded, like Hyde Park, by grass.. We sunbathed there for a bit.. Topping up the base tan ready for the beach!!
Sao Paulo is a huge huge city... The biggest in the Southern Hemisphere apparentely! We didnt even really see half of it but we had fun! Glad to be heading to thw beach now thou! Fed up of walking not gonna lie!!
Speak soon! Muchos love.
