Today we explored Bled - its lake & surrounding mountains.
We started by taking a brisk walk around the lake near the Olympic Rowing Centre & the church that's propped up on an island in the lake. We then drove around the lake & briefly visited Bled Castle that is sits on a high rock bed overlooking the lake. The views here were magnificent.
After lunch we headed off for our driving, sight-seeing adventure. We drove to another large lake, 'Bohinsjsko Jerezo'. Our journey took us through a valley where we drove alongside the Sava River all the way to the Savica Waterfall in the heart of Triglav National Park. The waterfall runs all the time & is 78m high, however, when it rains heavily the waterfall can reach a height of 600m where it falls from the top of the sheer cliff face, creating a chain of waterfalls.
We travelled through the towns, Bohinjska Bistrica, Tolmin, Kobarid, Bovec and Kranjska Gora all of these being located in valleys surrounded by mountain ranges. We worked our way through countless hairpin bends up to the 1600m high Vršič Pass so we could view Triglav mountain which is the highest peak in Slovenia and is surrounded by deep valleys & many other mountain peaks that are made of sheer rock faces.. On the way down from the pass the hairpin bends were made of cobblestones to help drivers maintain their grip on the road that is potentially more hazardous as it on the shady side of the mountains and therefore is more likely to be covered by snow in winter.
The Sava river enthralled us with its brilliant blues & greens as did the mountains with their rocky peaks & the valleys that were deep green and dotted with many new and old houses that were beautifully presented.
