Today we decide to avoid the Autobahns. Instead we travelled through lovely little towns, over passes and through valleys. We travelled up to and over the Passo di Pramollo at 1552m. The road up was hairy with tight hairpin bends and crazy drivers who constantly travelled on our side of the narrow roads. When we reached the top we could either have a coffee in Italy or Austria as the top of the pass divides these 2 countries. We decided on the Italian cafe & were surprised when the woman in the Italian café greeted us in Austrian, espresso was great. The decent was extremely steep with cobblestoned hair pin bends to help us make drive safer.
When we arrived at Lienz we stopped to watch the kayakers take on the rapids. After that we stopped at the Krimmler Wasserfalls - a series of waterfalls that at their peak have a 1470m drop. These falls are both spectacular and fierce - so much that when we stood 100m away from their base, we still felt their spray.
Gerlos Pass after the falls was 1600m high & very scenic. Our stay in Gerlos was comfortable & a bit deja vu as we stayed in Alpenherz Hotel where we stayed 2 years ago.
