Cindy Aserkoff's Travels
All the roads were closed today because of the marathon. It was a little strange to be walking around this city where half the country's population lives and see no cars or people. We did a very long walking tour this morning first of the art nouveau buildings around our hotel and then the old town. The art nouveau buildings were unique and random in their architecture. The old town has squares surrounded by narrow streets and tall buildings. Much of the city was destroyed during World War 2 and was reconstructed during the soviet occupation. Riga appears to be a lively city with lots of restaurants, bars, and music. Afternoon is on our own but for the first time it is raining and chilly. There will be another Latvia today discussion at 5:30. Dinner is on our own so we went to an extremely large market and bought smoked chicken, Latvian specialty and Latvian cheese and bread.
