Cindy Aserkoff's Travels
Left Lithuania this morning after visiting the Hill of Crosses. This is a hill in the middle of nowhere that people put crosses to honor the fallen freedom fighters and connect to their Lithuanian roots during soviet occupation. Soviets did try briefly to remove the crosses but they were always replaced. There are too many crosses to count. After bus ride we entered Latvia and our first stop was at an 18th century castle built by the same architects that designed the hermitage. Castle was for the niece of Catherine the great. She wanted a summer house for her lover. It was quite a summer house! Of course today was Robert's birthday. This morning he received a necklace of cookies and chocolate from our guide. When we entered Latvia he was given a bottle of black balsam, a speciality liqueur of Latvia. It is mixed with black currant juice and is very strong. Tonight our friends Barbara and Jan gave him underwear of the Lithuanian flag. It was quite fetching. All in all he had a better birthday here than he would have a home.
