So that's it! My 1100km route around Guatemala, all in one week, is over. Its been rushed, hectic, and thanks to my decision to go to Guatemala's most active volcano tomorrow, for every single morning I've been in Guatemala I would have been up before 6:30am.
I'm knackered. But then again, I'm going to be home in a few days. Despite much preferring the idea of going on to Mexico, Cuba or even Trump's America.
Much of the drive on from Rio Dulce was on the same roads I came in on from Copan. Huge thunderstorms welcomed us as we crossed the parched scrubland of eastern Guatemala, this rainy season being much less fruitful than usual in much of the country.
Am now in Antigua, which I have to say is the most architecturally impressive city in Latin America I've seen. The colonial buildings are both extraordinarily extravagant, and fantastically well-preserved.
Guatemala comes in as my second favourite country in the Americas after Bolivia. It's a small country, oozing with world-class attractions. It's also a fascinating country, with a troubling past and present, ruled over by an ex-comedian laughing at his diciples as he and his family embezzle the country's budget. No wonder a female anti-corruption lawyer is a leading candidate in the upcoming elections.
I also decided to have the nicest meal I've had, possibly in the whole continent. For £10 the chicken, stuffed with ham and cheese and served with asparagus and fries was probably worth 2 to 3 times that amount in some places in Britain. Anyway...
It's a late flight back to Costa Rica, where I am for one last Latin American day, before the long, long journey home...
Vamos!
