Europe 2011
This afternoon I went on a walking tour of the medieval city of Segovia. It is a beautiful town with not just one but two crown jewels. The first is a magnificent roman aqueduct and the other is a fairy tale castle. The first sight of the aqueduct is breathtaking. It is a massive construction with multiple levels of arches. The great stones that have been used have no mortar between them, being held in place by the sheer weight and by the perfect placement of the keystone at the top of each arch. Its survival in nearly perfect condition since its construction in the 2nd century AD is due to its relatively isolated position while centuries of conflict raged all around it.
