Christinas travels!
After a short ferry ride we visited Robben Island and were taken on a tour around the island by a former prisoner.
The islands unwilling inhabitants included slaves, political and religious leaders who oppoed Dutch colonialism and other Afrian leaders who resisted the British expansion in South Africa. During the apartheid years Robben Island became internationally known for its institutional brutality. Some freedon fighters spent more than a quarter of a century in prsion for their beliefs. Yet people such as Nelson Mandela emerged from hre to lead South Africa to democracy with a message of tolerance, reconciliaion and hope that moved the world. It is now a world heritage sight.................. For those of you that havent guessed I have lifted this from the information leaflet given to me!!
