Christinas travels!
After being greeted at the airport by fijians singing and dancing the bula dance I checked into my hotel. I was with 2 girls Id met in Australia for the first week and so the next morning I set off on a 2 week island hopping trip to the Yasawa islands - it is only a 30 minute boat trip to the first island and the scenery along the way is fantastic with crystal clear waters and you go past really small idiallic islands like the one in the picture. A tiny boat meets the the bigger boat and takes you to your resort - as you pull up on the beach the fijians are outside singing and welcoming you. As soon as you get off the boat they are offering you drinks and sort out all your luggage - it was really welcoming. Many of the islands are still owned by the fijan people and consist of a resort and their accomodation only so you do feel like you are in paradise on a remote island.
They then have a traditional welcome ceremony were they encourage you to you drink something called kava. It is basically the root of the kava plant crushed up in rain water, and is meant to have many health benefits for the stomach and fijians can't get enough of it. It has the most horrible taste and no of us liked it but you feel ignorant if you turn it down and the chief wouldnt be too happy!. You are then officially welcomed to the community and after meeting the chief of the village you go and meet the community who at the time of one visit were busy making grass skirts
The resorts are not what you would call luxury but they are in the most stunning settings. Can you believe that they don't have any mains electricity or water and have to have a generator which only comes on for limited hours! No hairdryers were allowed up here and they tell you to just bring a small bag as you can leave most of your luggage back on the mainland as you dont need much up here. They provide all your food as part of the package and their are no shops in site so I actually could not spend any money for 2 weeks apart from on drinks.
I chilled out on the beach most days and in hammocks but also their was loads of activities going on some of which I forced myself out of the hammock to join in...most islands have a sunset volleyball match where 'the world' team takes on the 'fijians' - all the staff come out and play and they absolutely love it and you can probably guess that they battered the rest of us.
'Fiji time' is big here everyone is so chilled out - for example the bar opening times which were 6pm until the last person leaves the bar. The Fijians do not rush anything - i think this is why they are all so happy and relaxed. You are woken up for breakfast by a loud drum and again this could be at anytime when they were ready.
Ive visited about 10 islands in total and seen many of the ones that have been in film sets. Nanuya Lailai which is really beautiful and I went in the blue lagoon (from the films) the water is unbelievable. Ive also been to Castaway island where Tom Hanks filmed the movie and I stayed 2 nights on bounty island where celebrity love island was filmed last year. It felt very bizarre sat on the decking by the pool and seeing the love shack...although for some reason they have not maintained the love shack as its on the other side of the island. They are filiming it on a different island in fiji this year as this one is famous enough now!
Most nights after dinner you would either have a bonfire on the beach with singing and dancing - or party games around the bar area.
Id recommend everybody to come to fiji as the have everything you could want in a tropical holiday - it was highlight of my trip so far even without staying the 5* resorts.
