From Kampot we got a taxi to the border of Vietnam. We knew today was going to be one hell of a day as we were aiming to get on an Island called Phu Quoc, We were recommended to go on this island by a guy called derren we met in bankok 6 weeks ago so we heard good things and decided we should go for it as we didnt want to miss anything. We knew it was going to be a long one as it used to be owned by Cambodia as the island itself is only 20k from Rabbit island but we had to go in to Vietnam then travell back up by boat to this island which was annoying.
So we got to the border which was suprisingly dead, but we then realised this border crossing was brand new so there wasnt that many people hasstling us. When we got to the border we had our visas stamped then we had to organise transport then to the nearest town from there called Hat tien which we thoguht we could get a ferry to Phu Quoc from. The moped ride was only about 10 minutes and we decided before getting a room we would have food and look at what we should do, we were so glad we did this as we found out that only dodgy fishing boats go to Phu Quoc from Hat tien and the Hydrofoil boat goes from the next town down called Rach Gia. We had to organise transport then to the bus station and a bus to Rach Gia. We got to the bus station and luckily there was a bus just ready to go, it cost about $1.50 and it was a 7 hour journey, in britain this would have taken 2 hours but there is no motorways here and the bus would stop every few kilometres to pick someone else up. The bus journey was funny really because it was all the locals and us squashed in to this tiny bus and the driver was gunning it like he was colin mcrea again weaving in and out of mopeds, dogs, chickens, cows, kids, you name it they were on that road and i thought we were gona crash a couple of times so as you can imagine i didnt get much sleep on this bus, plus he was beeping his horn about 70 times a second to worn anything in its path.
We eventually got to Rach Gia about 10:30 at night, really tired and roughed up so then we had the fun of fiinding a place to stay as the boat only leaves twice a day from the port in the morning. We eventually found a place to stay and the guy organised our boat ticket for the next day which was really good. We didnt do much in Rach Gia but you could tell it want a tourist place and most of the locals were not that friendly as what we have seen in other places, although the kids were happy to see us, all of them shouting hello, so we said thay about 50 times whenever we walked around. We tried finding a place to eat but it was a nightmare as everything shuts down early in this place. We eventually found a restaraunt and the food wasnt good and wasnt that cheap to be honest for what we got, but we went to bed early knwoing we had another long day getting to Phu Quoc.
