Day 22 Mamallapuram 3 May
Off at 8.30 on a cycle tour! Cycles are quite new but 1930's "sit up and beg" style and not good for my cool image. Saddles are of the same type we had earlier in the tour and gave me a serious case of saddle soreness! So I am adjusting my posterior to make sure the same thing doesn't happen again. I dread to think what I must look like as we wobble off down the road like a group of ugly ducklings following mum for their first swim.
We visit Hindu temples including one rescued from the sea some years ago that then went on to survive the great Tsunami. Then on to visit another group hewn out of solid rock 13/1400 years ago. Amazing they had the technology to do this at that time.
To be honest I am now getting a bit "templed out" but there's excitement at the next site we visit when we are prevented from parking the bikes and ushered away by a mad Indian shouting something about a hive of honey bees having been disturbed and wreaking revenge by stinging innocent bystanders! We are out of there pretty quick.
After lunch I go off alone to seek inspiration for my sketching abilities such as they are. While sitting on a rock keeping a wary eye on giant ants and a recently shed snake skin, I am greeted by locals curious about what I am doing, keen to take a peek and discuss where they and I am from. The genuine friendliness is interrupted rather rudely by a chap appearing to want to give me booklet that I cant even read and then asking me for money for it!
