Congratulations, today is your day. You're off to great places, you're off and away! ~ Dr Seuss
Well today was our big day. It was the first day of 5 days we would have out in the great western region of Queensland. So, after a few quick goodbyes, we piled onto the bus, with our trusty driver Graham from PCAP, and set out on the road. We travelled through Landsborough, Peachester, the enormous Sommerset Dam and arrived in Esk for a very short pit stop. Esk seemed like a friendly town with a very good looking antiques store, which unfortunately we couldn't spend long in. On from Esk, we travelled through Crows Nest, which we weren't planning on going through but got a bit lost, Hampton and Highfields, fuelled by bus kareoke. Luckily it didn't last long as Chris Dann was a bit of a microphone hog.
We then arrived in Toowoomba, boasting the longest road in the southern hemisphere, Ruthven st. We were told by our bus driver, Graham, that there is an annual uni pub crawl that happens along Ruthven st, needless to say, we were all intrigued... We travelled through this cute town to Picnic Point, which boasts a 280 degree view of Toowoomba and the surrounding ranges. Picnic Point was a great place for lunch, a part from the $9.00 sandwiches, and is place to a gigantic flag pole and $10,000 Australian flag!
On from Toowoomba, we drove and drove and drove... stopping only at Campus, a little petrol station where we met a truck driver filling up his truck with diesel. We were all amazed at the bill he was racking up - $709.51 and counting! We got back on the bus with a few extra friends (flies) and continued driving.
We finally arrived in Goondiwindi at 3:15pm. Hooray! We were all a bit restless from sitting for so long and ended up going to a local business called Goondiwindi Cotton, owned by Sam Coulton. Goondiwindi Cotton makes everything, from soap and yarn to summer and winter ranges of clothes. Sam was very informative about his business and invited us out to his farm to have a look around as well. We were all intrigued by the fields upon fields of wheat, barley, cotton and chickpeas!! Some spent quite a while just picking and picking.
Finally, we arrived at our accommodation at the Victoria Hotel, which was conviently located just a short walk from Goondiwindi State School. We were all famished and quickly put our bags in our rooms and went on the hunt for food. We decided on a Chinese shop and quickly ate all of our meals. We then headed back to our hotel and had a debrief and off to bed! However, some stayed up to play pictionary and watch Shrek on VHS.
We were looking forward to our packed day of activities tomorrow.
