It's opener out there, in the wide open air. ~ Dr Seuss
It was an early start in Goondiwindi today. We were off to Inglewood to visit Inglewood State Primary School and St. Maria Goretti Catholic School. After a short bus ride, we arrived in Inglewood. This town boasts an excellent take away shop and olive farms.
We started our day at the state school with a tour from the Principal, Peter Lund. The school is funded greatly by PCAP (thanks Graham!) and has a range of excellent facilities, including a Stephanie Alexander garden. We were lucky enough to be invited to one of the year 6/7 home economics lessons, where the children created a three course meal using fresh vegies, flowers and produce from their garden. The meal included silverbeet and coconut copperpot soup, carrot muffins with garlic butter sauce and energy slice. The meal was amazing and so were the hosts!
For lunch were travelled down the road to the local bakery. We all enjoyed something a little bit sweet and something savoury in their eating area, which was an old train carriage.
After lunch, we drove to St Maria's and were given a wonderful guided tour by their Principal. The school was very small, compared to the state school, however well equipped with technology and resources. Once again, thanks to PCAP for donating the Smart Boards!
We then got on the bus again and went to the Coolmunda olive farm and met the owner. She showed us her olive vats and we were allowed to try one of the varieties, which was amazing! We also learnt about growing olive trees and harvesting them. With some nagging we also got to see her farm animals, which included 200 ducks (49 of them were ducklings), 3 pigs, some chickens and a dog. After buying some of her lovely products we got back in the good old PCAP bus (which was looking extremely muddy) and finally checked into our accommodation, the Olympic Motel. We were extremely please to have our own showers in the rooms, although some of the toilets didn't work.
That evening we were invited back to the state school for a fun filled night of pizza and board games. After many laughs, we headed home for a good night sleep - we had definitely earned it.
