Wow!!
That's all there is to say really, although it would probably be more use to you all if I were to explain!! Agra, home to the Red fort and the Taj Mahal really is a city of contrasts!! At one end there are these amazing sights and at the same time there is sooo much rubbish, dirt and poverty that it does slightly taint the glistening marble on the Taj Mahal….that said, the Taj Mahal was amazing!! Words can't really do the place justice so I won't try to describe the marble inlayed with gems and precious stones, or the Koran which is written around the doors of the building. Indeed, for once I'll let pictures do the talking…..but I will say that the scale of the building is enough to take your breath away, let alone the fact that is in fact a tomb which was built 400 years ago!!
Anyway, like I say, I can't do the place justice in words so I will let you see the pictures for yourself!!
Of course, the Red fort is also pretty amazing...as the capital of the Mongal empire, war and the threat of war was always going to be an issue for Agra. However, the titanic Red fort with its two tiered motes and many other forms of defiance (including crocodiles and tigers) were never put to the test! Anyway, the fort was amazing just to walk around, although since it is still used by the Indian army, only 1/4 of the place is open to the public! None the less, Agra is defiantly worth a visit if only to witness these places! However, this was not to be the case with me as, having looked around the main sights yesterday, I got a chance to visit some of the less well known sights of Agra, including the "Mini Taj" which, like the Taj Mahal, is built in perfect symmetry and sits on the other side of the river to the real Taj...all in all, Agra is good, although it is a shame that in a city which must generate so much money from tourism, that there is still so much hardship for the average person....
Will be in touch soon with another update!!!
