Well here I am in China (I have moved to this Blog because my original cannot get through the Great FireWall - really it is called that!).
I have been here 4 days and am still getting used to the way things are done here. Language training everyday is intense but helping. I have no fear of going into cafes and restaurants (well at least ones with picture menus). The walk to VSO office is amazing - once I cross a VERY wide and busy road - wilth the help of volunteer crossing assistants - woe betide anyone who tries to cross at the incorrect time! - I walk through a beautiful park packed with people doing Tai Chi and ballroom dancing, then the embassy areas with large mansions and chinese guards and finally the Russian quarter.
The city is so clean and modern - all the usual fast food chains you would expect everywhere else - plus Yonghe King - like Burger King but with noodles. Eating out is very cheap if you go to the right places.
Today I visited a volunteer centre in the city and learnt a lot about attitudes volunteering in China. I will meet them again in December when I come back to Beijing for the Volunteer Conference organised by VSO.
Was hoping to visit the Great Wall this weekend but have stupidly sprained an ankle (again!) so climbing the wall is out of the question. I'll go in December.
Training until Tuesday then off to Shenzhen for the assignment.
Zai Jian!
