Day twenty-one and it began with an early start and our first Swiss breakfast with lots to choose from. You can always tell if it's going to be a good breakfast when there is a range of breads to choose from and they offer to make you a tea or coffee.
We set off to Interlaken Ost train station which the signs didn't really point clearly to. After walking for a bit I decided to ask someone where it was, and we were walking in the wrong direction. We turned around and headed in the right direction and with the assistance of the trusty iPhone again ended up having a lovely stroll along the river towards Interlaken Ost station. It just meant we had to catch a later train than planned.
We hopped on a train that took us to Lauterbrunnen and from there we jumped on a bus to Stechelberg. This was the beginning of our climb up to the mighty Schilthorn.
To get up to the top it was a matter of catching four cable cars. The first took us to Grimmalward, the second to Murren, the third to Birg and then finally the last one took us to the top of the Schilthorn.
Just so you know these cable cars are just like big glass ski chair lifts. They hang from a steel cable and they climb the mountain rather steeply. On the way down they go rather quickly and occasionally when it goes over the pole it drops. It's a pretty cool way to get up and down from the top of a mountain!
We walked out onto the viewing terrace at 2971m above sea level and it was a glorious view. Surrounded by snow capped alps, Ryan ran around like crazy taking photos before the cloud came over and I just strolled around and took it all in. It doesn't look real. It's like your looking at a painted picture except your hands and face are cold while looking at it. It really is something you have to see for yourself. You can try and take pictures but in the end it's just not the same nor does it do it any justice.
Anyway after spending about an hour up there just looking in ore we headed back down and decided to get off the cable car at Murren and hike to Grimmelward.
It was a pleasant walk, perfect weather and the best backdrop you'll ever get. Not only did we get to admire the scenery we also got rather entertained by a big mountain dog. He and his owner were taking the same path down and he was hot and bothered by it. Every little stream down he would hop in and lap it up with a massive smile and then wouldn't get out. When he finally had to, he would just slowly walk behind and sulk until the next little stream of water. Reminded me a lot of Mac.
After 40mins of walking we got to Grimmelward where the only way down was by cable car. So we headed down and next on the plans was the Trummelbach waterfalls.
Walking up to the entry point you could hear the thunder of them. For me waterfalls are amazing and I love them, so at this point I was like a little child and was very excited to get up there.
To get the falls numbered 6-10 you take a lift, and not just any lift. This lift was all glass and it went up a tunnel on an angle rather quickly. That was amazing enough for me.
We hopped out of the lift and followed the path to all the different sections of the canyon and its viewing points. The water was gushing down at full steam. It was unbelievably loud and it was gave us a feeling as to how strong it was by all the spray we got smacked with.
The tunnels they have dug and the paths all the way around are fantastic. It is the most spectacular canyon / waterfall I have ever seen. I could not close my jaw or stop saying 'wow'!
After that we decided it was time to eat. We headed back to Lauterbrunnen and found a little cafe and had a beautiful homemade pie and homemade soup for lunch.
Next up was a train trip to Grindelwald. It's was getting late in the arvo so we decided to just stroll around the village and take a short hike up to the next little village and back.
Once back in Interlaken we headed out for dinner. Deciding on places to eat is rather hard. Everything is expensive in Switzerland and so finding cheap meals is really hard and half the time you can't read the menu so you become hesitant.
The reason I am telling you this is to justify our place of dinner. As tacky as it is, we shamefully went to an American Hooters in Switzerland. Yes, I know horrible, but it was a good cheap meal. We ate quickly and got out. Thanks Trip Advisor for the tip.
We hired a DVD and Ryan managed to navigate the German menu and play it in English. He was less then impressed with my selection of 'Life as we know it' though.
After a big day and a classy dinner we called it a night.
