After saying our goodbyes to Frank, Mel and her relatives who were so hospitable we were faced with a 6 hour drive to Sorrento, well this is what the Nav-biatch indicated. During this trip we experienced heat, rain and thunderstorms which made driving at times near impossible although we pressed on to Carmel's disgust. We shared driving and stopped quite a few times during the trip. The countryside and mountain ranges were spectacular from what you can see travelling at 130km/h+. There is so many new roadworks on the Autostrada the Nav- biatch kept getting confused this is a common occurrence now and we are now used to it so we use a combination of navigator, road signs and instinct. Having this understanding saves a lot of time and quibbles.
Arriving at the Amalfi coast at last Carmel was driving and decided to take on the streets of the coast road. OMG the streets are so narrow and the drivers and riders are crazy the centre line may as well be non-existent especially at corners and when you come to a coach there is a different set of rules; make way into a crevice in the wall or behind a parked car. Yes! No matter how narrow, the locals and visitors still park on the roads edge barely leaving enough room for 2 cars. Carmel did a great job driving through here although I almost died from lack of oxygen as I held my breath for almost the whole trip and had umpteen panic attacks on the way to Amalfi. Whew! we arrived unscathed "we'll done Carmel". Just getting here took a good seven hours we still had to get to Sorrento! Thanks Nav-b****....
We stopped here to have a break, walk through the town and have some dinner. Finding a parking spot is near impossible although we persisted so I jumped out of the car when I found one and started to direct traffic to make way for my baby.
The town was nice with wall to wall restaurants, souvenir shops and up market stores selling brand name merchandise. Definitely a good setting for eye candy for both sexes.
After dinner it was my stint on the coast road although it wasn't as busy as our first leg it was dark. Carmel had her anxiety under control but tried to slow me down on every corner. I told her that my style of driving suited Italy and not to worry.... Well that went down like a lead balloon! The coastline at night is absolutely magnificent and unfortunately my camera battery run out and had to use IPad so photos aren't as good.
Finally here The Grand Hotel Vesuvius, another late night and ready to hit the sights tomorrow.
