So...Buenos Aires.
Well, as adventurous a time as we had, we think we'd rather skip it next time round. It wasn't our favorite stint on the trip so far, but we did have some fun.
Our first day in Buenos Aires we took a tour of the city that led us through La Boca, where we joined the crowds in lively and colorful Caminito where the tango was born. The streets were packed with people watching street tango, looking at art crafted by local artisans, and eating at outdoor cafes. We also went to the port there, where the sea was bubbling with toxic waste and people were gathered protesting all of the pollution to the oceans. Interesting scene! We also went to the Plaza de Mayo, and through the areas of Palermo, San Telmo and Recoleta.
Later after the tour we decided to grab some lunch along the river where we were victims of a well planned camera snatching. The only good news out of that story is that we now have a new camera with which to take photos of the rest of our journey.
That night we went to a Tango show. The dancers were really impressive, but the highlight of the night was the steak....it was the best steak we've EVER had...seriously. It was a good night out.
Our second and last day in Buenos Aires turned out to be quite a bit better. We went to some really cool markets in San Telmo where there were some interesting street performers, fancy shops, and a really great pizza place where we enjoyed lunch with a couple from San Francisco named Dave and Hayley. They also had an interesting antique market. We continued on to some other markets at Recoleta and also sat in the park watching some tango dancers. The cemetery at Recoleta had some incredibly ornate tombs, which were cool, and we saw the tomb of Eva Peron, more famously known as Evita.
The lesson we learned here is that we aren't the city girls we thought we were...we prefer the smaller centers where people are friendlier and the places are easier to navigate. Good thing we're in a really small place for the next 8 months then I guess! ;)
Much love,
Stacy and Shelly
