Guatemala is amazing! From Antigua made the two and a half hour journey north to Panajachel - a small town on the edge of LakeAtitlan. View of the lake were phenomenal - lake is 128 square km, and up to 320m deep in placesand is surrounded by colourful hills.Three volcanoes dominate the backdrop to the lake. Didn't stay in Panajachel, but instead went straight to the port and got on a private boat charter to the town of San Pedro La Laguna.Arrived in San Pedro and instantly liked the place.Just before we docked on the jetty, you got views of all the local women washing and cleaning them selves in the lake on the rocks.Had a great meal on the edge of the lake and was served by a lovely little Japanese lady, who became our favourite person in town.Town was just full of really cool hangout joints, most of which we didn't even go to as we just enjoyed doing nothing. It's such a peaceful place.. Spent the days generally just eating, or chilling on the jetty, and swimming in the shimmering waters.Chatting in the late afternoon with the local childrenand people having their daily wash in the lake.Guatemalan people are so friendly, and its so cool that the people really cherish their culture. Most women still wear their traditional colourful outfits. One day hired a kayak to row to a neighbouring town of San Marco, a spiritual place, where lots of people chill out and do Yoga and all that other new age stuff.Would have loved to spend a few days here as well, but no time..Didn't end up getting there, as the weather was pretty cloudy, so couldn't feel the heat from the sun, and Claud's was not only rubbish at rowing, scooping up all the water onto me, she also got scared in the big waves that were hitting us.Turned back and had our usual day of chilling on the jetty… Should have hired some bikes and rode around the lakes looking at some of the other towns, or got boats there, but just not enough time to do everything..Really should have gone to Santa Cruz as well.Suppose to be the ideal town because it has a mix of the party atmosphere of San Pedro and the spiritual feel of San Marco.Realised that haven't nearly got enough time to do everything I want to.Not only did we not have enough time to see some of the other towns along the lake, also missed the market day (Thursday and Sunday) at Chichicastenango as would have to wait around another day.Instead we compromised and spent the day in Panajachel shopping… Had some great stuff to buy here, but it's a shame that it was at the beginning of our trip, when we didn't want to be lugging stuff around.. Did buy a bag and a few pairs of the infamous Panajachel pants - have to trust me that they are ultra cool!!!Had a bit of time to kill, so made the mistake of trying to get my haircut at a local barber shop…Wanted to cut a Mohican, but ended up having to cut all my hair off as he gave me a local Guatemalan cut.
Left San Pedrowith a feeling of sadness, and having spent a day shopping, made our way back to Antigua for a stop overnight, before making our way to Livingstone, all the way over on the Carribean coast.
