Its our last day in Antigua. Really starting to find my feet now, and feel like I'm travelling. On my first full day sorted out getting a room.. and managed to get a really nice one with TV - What a luxury!!!Chatted with some of the other guest at hotel and got the low down on Antigua.Really like the place we're staying.Laura and Paul were two particular nice people from Texas, who would always give us the ideas about what was good/bad etc.. They were hanging around town as they just had their credit cards stolen in a cash machine scam, I think inChichicastenango, so were waiting for replacementsClauds met me later in the day.. Arrived quite late, so couldn't organise any tours…Just had a good walk around the town and had some food.Went to Café Sky and watched Sunset there.Such a cool bar.Had some good Quesadillas, and a few beers. Didn't go crazy, went to some local fast food joint.Wasn't that fantastic, but filled the gap. Next day again, just chilled out in the morning, had slow breakfast…which was always tasty, and spent time in the courtyard chatting with all the guests.Place really feels like home.Afternoon meet in the Plaza central and met up with the local police there who do escorted trips to a Mirador just outside town near the local Cemetery, which gives a great view of the Town.Wasn't that high up the Volcano, but still was a great view.. Shame the weather came in a bit, so the day was a bit cloudy, and the volcano in the back drop was obscured. But was still a nice little walk.Police do the escorted walks as lots of tourists have been robbed in the past.Would have been nice to do the walk by ourselves, but guess the police escort people there for a reason.Did see the police arrest a thief earlier in the day.Met CJ and Claire I think, an Aussie and French couple and shared a few beers with them at Café Sky.Got too cold though, as the sunset, to stay, so headed back to hotel.Antigua is so hot during the day, but its gets really cold as soon as the sunset sets.Today was awesome. Chilled out during the day, but then took a trip to Volcano Pacaya -the most active of 33 volcanoes in Guatemala. There are two other active ones in the area. Walk up was pretty steep, but the views from the top were amazing. Clauds was having a pretty hard time getting to top, think her legs had give away on her.. She didn't seem that keen to stay on the lava fields.. Don't blame her, it felt pretty dangerous with the fierce winds and the ground breaking up around you. Especially when you could feel the fierce heat from the lava, on your skin and even coming up from the soles of your shoes...Starting the hike up during daylight, but by the time we got to the lava fields it was getting pretty dark.Landscape was amazing, Terra Firma wasn't that firm and the lava was unbelievably hot......pretty scary at times there.Don't think we would be allowed here if it was most other countries, making it all the more rewarding. Sunset was awesome. It was dark by the time we left the Lava fields, so we had to pretty careful making our way back off the volcano. Finally back at our lovely hotel, and making the most of our free internet, and going to get some food, and drink a Gallo - I love this beer.Hoping to get an early night, as have an early start tomorrow and heading north to Panajachel. Hopefully it will be a lot less touristy than Antigua.Despite being full of Gringos', have really grown to like Antigua. It's tiny so you really get to know it after only a few days. It is really pretty with all its cobbled streets, and it has so many cool places to hang out.Our favourites were:-Rainbow Cafe - cool restaurant/traveller library which had live music and a fire to keep the place warm every night. Didn't realise until our second time there, that it is actually outside. We looked up and we could see the Sky.Cafe Sky:- This was on the far south east of the town in a quieter area. Had a really great roof terrace which gave a really good view of the town and the volcanoes surrounding it. Was a great hangout for sunset.
Cafe No Se;- This was really close by and looked really cool, but didn't really have time to check it out... Heard it had the best coffee in town though!
