7 days in Iceland
Iceland is a beautiful country!Lots of waterfalls. Glaciers, Geysers, canyons, a glacier lagoon, rivers and oceans.
Our trip started just south of the arirport in a town called Grindavik where we visited the Blue Lagoon.Very over priced but very cool hot mineral lake.We then set off heading toward the Golden Circle.Saw a geyser and the largest of Icelands waterfalls - Gulfoss. Also made a stop at a 6500 year old crater lake!Stayed in a town called Hella where we got to see a small version of the Northern Lights!Green dancing lights in the sky.Continued east along the southern coast which has lots of stops for sights along the way.Ours included a waterfall, a rocky plateau with a stone arch which we climbed around for an hour, and the black sand beaches of Vik.Stayed that night in a town too long to write but the short version is Klauster.Very cute cabin but the winds seemed like it was going to blow it down!
It is off-season here and the problem is not finding lodging with availability….it is finding lodging that is open!We are nearly the only guests in most places we've stayed in….once we locate someone to get the room from. It's been interesting.
The next day took us past the Skaftafell National Park - a huge National park which is mostly glacier.Walked up to the top of a waterfall to start the day!Took a hike up to the the glacier and tried to set up snowmobiling but it was too late and a storm was coming. He told us to call the next day which we did.Stayed in Hofn that night and went out for a decent dinner finally. We set off early for our snowmobiling trip. The guide took us in a 4WD up the mountain to the glacier we were to ride on.There was a huge storm and about ½ mile from our destination we had to stop…he couldn't go any further! We could have walked it but it was too damn windy and stormy so we chose to turn around and go back!Quite a scary drive and an adventure in itself.Off to the east fjords and Northward bound we went.We attempted to pass the mountain going 2 different routes and got stuck and had to back down both times due to snow.It was scary as hell and after the 2nd attempt we gave up and went to find a room. The only place we could find was a very cool hotel in Breiodalsvik (pop 220) that was closed for remodel. The guy doing the work called the owner and they gave us a room in the completed area.A group of locals asked us to dinner (in the only restaurant in town) and the evening turned out to be quite fun after a not-so-great day.The big decision now was - do we attempt North again or turn around.Everyone had a different opinion of course but in the end, we chose to turn back.I've had enough of snow storms this year!Back toward Reykavick and then we'll head up the west coast but it looks like the North is out.We stopped at a gorgeous waterfall we had missed on the way up but otherwise it was just a driving day.Stayed in a really nice place in Hveragerd with mineral pools and "hot pots".This wind is KILLER and although the temp is similar to Big Bear, the wind makes it nearly unbearable.Off to the west tomorrow where I hope the wind lets up a bit!
