Zaid's entry: Today was the first day that I really was able to get out and do some site-seeing. I hailed a cab and headed for downtown.
I decided to go check out ancient ruins in Amman. The structure is called "the citadel" in English. In Arabic it's Jebel al Qala'a. The complex was first built very early in the 1st millennium AD (~100) but has been rebuilt and augmented a number of times since then by different civilizations.
It's purpose served differing functions (fortified city, upper class residence) but was always considered a strategically located due to it's panoramic view of the surrounding city.
There was also an archaeological museum on the site (of course nit historic) which housed artifacts from around Jordan and Palestine - jewelry, lamps, statues, scrolls, etc. It was definitely pretty neat to see.
The picture is of Zeus' Temple - a temple built in honor of Zeus. I couldn't really find a description of the purpose of the temple however...
New entries to follow to add a couple more pictures of the day...
