With sore legs from the journey in Petra the day before, we headed to Dana Nature Reserve for a day of birding and bugging. Starting from 1100m above sea level at the old village of Dana, we hiked down the steep cliffs to ~300m. Along the full hike you pass through 3 distinct climatic zones, which was quite noticeable. The valley bottom was lush with vegetation, a flowing stream and wildflowers. We put our binoculars and field guide to the birds of the middle east to good use. Realized not all Starlings are annoying invaders- Tristram's Starling is metallic blue-black with orange wing feathers and much nicer sounding. Favorite of both of us: the Palestinian sunbird. Saw numerous large tenebrionid beetles, some scarabs, a meloid, cerambycid, some heteropterans, etc... Another full day in the sun hiking and doing what we love.
