Hello,
So it’s been a while since my last blog, mainly because had a hard week or so here in the village and if I’d written a blog I’d have been pretty ranty and moany not really what you want to read! Will tell more when I’m home but basically it’s hard to feel useful here 24/7 and like your making a real difference. I felt at times my time would be better spent in the foundation office trying to raise money. Also life here for westerners can be very frustrating because African mentality is so different and we can’t just roll up and make changes overnight.
But any way...there has been plenty of good moment even I don’t see them at times! We’ve had a bit of dream team here the last few weeks of great volunteers which really makes a difference. If we didn’t get on so well I think I might be on a plane home by now! We’re all really different and I’m the only non-American but we have so much fun together even when we’re just ranting about village life. We’ve also started a rather dangerous trend of prank pulling; most of its pretty juvenile and silly. But it gets me through the day when ive hid in some ones eco-toilet for 20 minutes just to jump out at them. It’s me and Keri that are the prank masterminds although she turned traitor on me and they super glued my mosquito net to my bed this week. Its complete warfare now, we’re on look out for the stray cat so we can lock it in john’s room.
Also had some really cute moments with the kids recently. Taught some boys how to do long jump in this big sand pit which then just ended up with me sat in it with kids leaping at me and landing on me. And the new families needed new clothes this week so I saw the massive mess that is the clothes container. It’s basically a big storage trailer piled high with bags and bags of clothes. So to find a pair of shorts for a 4yr old boy is a mission. We had 4 families of 10 to find two outfits each for, which is made more difficult by the girls not being allowed to wear trousers just skirts.
But it was really satisfying when you’ve dug out the t-shirt that makes up the bundle that you give away to the kids. Some of the kids had no clue what was going on when we were handing them clothes but lots of them were so, so happy. They were hanging onto them for dear life while they waited for the others like someone was going to take them back off them! I’m sure it’s the first time any of them have had anything new before.
We ran into some problems guessing the sizes for them as all you know is the age and gender, but also the new families are seriously malnourished so even with guessing down lots were too big. One girl who looking at her you would think she was 6yrs old was actually 13.
So back in the container today to find shoes! And to organise the whole thing. I’m going to love it.
Off to kwa vonza tonight the nearest little village that has to bars with luke warm beer! Half of the fun of going is boda boda rides we get there and back-the main village road is being re-done so we take the back route through the bush land! Like times in Uganda, possibly on your own this would be scary so i normally share with some so theres 3 of us on the bike and they’ll be a big convoy of us tonight! So don’t worry mum!
Lots of love to everybody, home in 3 weeks!!! Whoop!
