This time the journey was easy, a 30 minute 'Seatran' from Koh Samui to Koh Phangan. We arrived with the usual greeting of 'Taxi?' 'Where you going?' 'Taxi? Taxi?!' So we quickly chose our driver who took us to Cookies Salad Resort across the hilly rollercoaster-like roads.
The beautiful beach was revealed, accompanied by the lush green jungle surrounding it. I thought the hotel's restaurant had a good view, but once we were shown to our room it became clear that our view was amazing! A huge room, clean, free water/toiletries with a large balcony and a perfectly placed hammock. Not bad for £20 a night with all you can eat breakfast!
We picked a spot by the pool for the next few days a stones throw from the beach. We decided to hire snorkels and swim to the offshore 'reef'. The first day we didn't make it due to leaky equipment so we tried again the next day once testing out the snorkels. Compromising on the ones with less leakage,we embarked on our quest for the reef! Once we walked across the sharp dead coral we came across a lot of sea cucumbers, leopard print fish and a few others. We finally made it to the pile up of dead coral which probably was a reef in the past, and climbed onto the 'island'. From here you got great views of the bay and the collection of token long tails scattered over the water.
We resumed position at our sun beds for most of our days here with our 3 legged dog we named 'pippy'. We ate out for lunch at the local places along the beach and stayed for dinner at our hotel as we had a tab (it somehow made it seem we weren't spending any money!). We have discovered a love for papaya salad so ordered it at any chance we got! We saw quite a few storms come over the island later on in the day, bringing with it bucket loads of rain- so much that one night we had drops coming through the ceiling and a newly formed river outside the front door!
Overall a great stay, for an island known only for it's full moon party, it has the most incredible west coast. It couldn't be any further from what you expect at Haad Rin. I can't believe most people never visit this place!
