Good morning from Ilah Grande! I have seen the most amazing tropical weather over the last three days ranging from 35 degree heat to huge thunder storms where the streets flooded (the streets are made of sand here) and all the power went out!
Ilah Grande is a small Island off the cost of southern Brazil, which has had an interesting past as both a farm and a penal colony and now its main mode of income is tourism. It is very similar to Rio in that it is made up of loads of large, steep hills, covered in rainforest and inhabited by little monkeys (and so so many stray dogs!)
On the first day here a few of us headed down to the black beach. The sand on this part of the island is black due to the minerals in the water. And of course took the fisrt of many dips in the sea (which started on the boat out here when we all jumped off into the most salty water imaginable!)
The nest day we walked to Lopez Mendes beach on the other side of the island. This beach is one of the top 20 beaches in the world and it was truly breathtaking. It reminded me a lot of Floreat or Scarborough beach back in Perth, with crystal clear water and sand like velvet. But what set this beach apart was that the rain forest literally spills right onto it - one moment you are in dense jungle and the next on an open coastline.
Yesterday we took a bopat trip to some of the lagoons around the island - however it rained, and rained! So we couldn´t find any fish when snorkelling and ended up huddles under towels hiding from the onslaught of water! Dinner that night was hillarious, we had to use torches to get into town because all the power was out and the restaurants that did have generators were packed!
Today I am off to Paratay, a little colonial town in southern Brazil, after another boat ride and a long walk down the sandy steets from the hotel!
Until next time
