We arrived early from the coach to Buenos Aires and despite the traffic managed to get to the hotel by lunch, about two hours later! South America can be frustratingly laid back / unhelpful!
The hotel we stayed in was lovely, a boutique hotel in an area close to the congress building, and our room had a jacuzzi bath (although the toilet was broken). As we had to pay for half a night for cancelling the previous day late, they gave us breakfast, which was actually really nice.
Newly refreshed we set off to see Buenos Aires. We started with a walk to get our bearings then headed off to La Boca, apparently not a very safe suburb but known for the Boca Juniors football team (who weren't playing sadly...) and the caminito - a small area of brightly painted houses with random life size papier-mâché figures hanging out of the balconies, apparently created by an artist in the 50s.
It was a bit touristy so not long after we got a taxi over to San Telmo, then walked through all the main sites there and in Montserrat, the oldest suburb. It was very pretty. We saw the theatre, the rose coloured presidential building and the plaza de mayo.
Later we walked over to the docks along puerto madras, then up through the city's financial centre towards the congress building, which was impressive despite the building works all around. We also saw the obelisk and the health building, which had Eva Peron painted on the side. On the whole the city was a lot busier with more people at work than Rio had been, it felt a lot more cosmopolitan and there were a lot of European style buildings.
For dinner we went for our first steak and wine in Argentina, they were fab!
