Bula!! From Fiji!
We got to Fiji on the 29th March, and have been having a wonderful time. We were greeted off the plane by a Fijian band and presented with shell necklaces. We chilled out for a couple of nights at our resort in Nadi before hopping on the Feejee Experience bus for a awesome few days! First of all we went to Nadi town before heading to Natadola Beach, on the coral coast, where we took our first dip in fijian waters. Clear, perfect blue and warm as a bath...heaven. Headed off to Sigatoka to a Fijian village, for a look at local life. Makes you appreciate what you have when you see how poor some of these people live. We then made our way to the sand dunes for some crazy ass sandboarding! Have a look at the pics, they dont give you a true concept of how high it was. Spent the night at Mango Bay on the Coral Coast, locals came in and performed for us while we ate.
Next day we went on a 3-4 hour trek through the Namosi Highlands, walking through the Rainforest and the creek. It was so hot that after it we tubed down the Navua River before stopping off to dive in a waterfall plunge pool. Again look at the pics...we got to go behind the waterfall...was amazing! Then took a long boat ride back and spent the night in Suva.
We woke up and off we went to another village for a traditional sevu-sevu Kava ceremony. Kava is a fijian herb-based alcohol which tastes and looks just like muddy water. It is the root of a tree which is grounded up into a fine powder then mixed with water, served in a coconut shell. It is custome to clap before accepting the Kava then clap three times after finishing. It makes your mouth numb and makes you sleepy. After that the boys drank more Kava while the girls weaved bracelets from the coconut tree leaves. That eve we stayed a Voli Voli resort near Rakiraki (google it) and we liked it so much that we stayed for a week. The first eve we had a party where Charlie won the limbo (he actually looks like he is made of jelly!) a secret talent he had been keeping to himself and Zoe won the dance off. There was a beach bonfire where we all sat around chatting and listening to our candian budies playing the guitar. The next day we visited a local school and it is something we will never forget. We were the first tourists ever to visit the school. Upon arriving we had to sit in a classroom and sing for them to meet us ("If your happy and you know it"...chosen by Zoe) we were then greeted with flower garnets and flowers for our hair being addressed as sir and madame. The younger kids sang and danced for us while the older danced with each other (like dirty dancing...was hilarious) We gave gifts of stationary. We were shown around the school before hopping off in the town. The rest of the bus, except us and 4 more left after that. At Voli Voli we went kayaking and snorkling. Snorkling was fantastic, there is some of the best soft corals to be seen anywhere in the world.
After chilling out there for a week we left for the rest of the bus trip. Where we got the wonderful opportunity to go to the school again (they had new danced routines!) We then headed north west of the island through the sugar cane fields and "Bollywood" film locations. Taking an insight to the Indo-Fijian culture by stopping in the Ba district for a Ruby Murray (curry). We finished the day at the mud pools and hot pool at the base of Sabeto Valley. Again look at the pics. The mud pool was a wierd experience. You jump in and are surrounded by muddy water while you are almost waist deep in mud. You get plastered in the stuff before washing off and relaxing in the hot pools. Which are hot, like hotter than you would have your bath water!
We are at present staying at The Beachouse where Celebrity Love Island was filmed. We have been here for a few days and today we went on a 4 hour Waterfall trek. Leave tomorrow for Nadi. Love ya!!!
