It was now time to make the journey across to the South Island, just a 3 hour ferry trip across.
Our first excursion was a wine tasting tour in Nelson .... hehe. The three of us went to four different vineyards and a brewery. We attempted to make intelligent comments about each wine.. 'this one is much oakier, fruitier, spicier' of course we found the whole thing very hilarious, and the more we drank the funnier it became. Mand getting the hiccups and going increasingly rosy-classy. A very funny day and we all arrived back to back to base some what sloshed!
Monday 17th we went for a walk on a flowing river of ice. We took a half day guided hike at the Fox Glaciers. The views are just stunning, once you make it up the 500 steps. You each put on your crampons (also renamed to us girls as tampons)- which are in fact grips at the bottom of your shoe. It is a bizarre feeling to be walking upon miles of ice, the guides with their pic axes carving away at the ice for us. The each took the mad from the ice and made them into mud mask- which we are told is great for the skin!?
Tuesday- its off to Queenstown, undoubtedly our most favourite place from all of our travels. It is known as the adventure capital of the world. Charlie and Katie went for a two hour hoarse trek through the mountains and lakes. The hoarse which they were riding were used in the Lord of the rings. Charlie hoarse was named drummed, the biggest of all the fleet. Needless to say Charlie was walking like John Wayne by the end! Katie even managing a bit of a canter!
The afternoon the three of us went hang gliding. The guides told us "just to run off the edge of the cliff". In fact it turned out not to be as scary as we first thought. But the views were breath taking . Mand having seen the girls do their gliding, insisting the guide took her on a scary ride, so got to enjoy the loops, and "driving" the glider.
Thursday, we were off to Mount cook to stay in a gorgeous ski lodge. The evening was spent having a toga party- you know what we are like for fancy dress, even finding appropriate foliage!
Friday, and it was the last day of the tour, which we were all most upset by, as its been just fantastic. We made our way back to Christchurch for an emotional goodbye and for one last supper.
Saturday morning and it was time to say goodbye to Katie. The three of us did not want to leave and was an emotional goodbye on the way to the airport. But for Charlie and Mand it was time to set sail to Fiji and hopefully catch a few rays (as we are still remarkably pasty!)
