Hellooo and welcome to Cairns!
After 6 months in Australia we finally made it to Cairns on the 16th after our last Greyhound of a total 9 journeys and 48 hours of sitting on bus seats with Cerys sprawled across me at least half the way! :D.
We stayed at Cairns Beach House just 20 mins walk outside of the main town so the first two days we wandered around the town getting our bearings and finding the cheapest places to drink! Cairns hasn't changed at all in 5 years either mum, still seems to be on the slower side of life.
In our hostel we realised that we were staying with a couple Laura and Chris that we had met a few times up the coast and white water rafted with! (Cerys recognised them by the shoes outside the door hehe). We also got free meals every evening, if you called them a meal, so I had to upgrade mine each evening :P I'm still a growing lad! Cerys thinks sidewards though :P.
On the Tuesday we had a trip out to a part of the reef called Upolu Cay on a boat
Ocean Freedom. We got two opportunities to snorkel another part of the reef which was different again to the other two we've done. We managed to see Crush, Mr Ray and Nemo (For anyone not with it, thats a turtle, stingray and clown fish!). We'd also hired out an underwater camera for two days and took lots of photos. But we did have a problem with the batteries running out so Cerys put on her angry voice when we got back and phoned the company, landing us a free upgrade of camera for the next day hehe!
So with our new camera we were up and out early the next morning for a tour into the tablelands and rainforest where we saw some HUUGGEEE spiders (wait until you see the photos) a musky rat kangaroo, a Boyd's forest dragon some turtles that breathe out of their bum! Our guide Bart is possibly the greatest guide we ve had in Australia and made the trip. He also knew the name for turtle in just about every language known to man! He also took us to Milaa Milaa Falls, the most photographed waterfalls in Australia and more importantly (to the women) the set for Peter Andre's Mysterious Girl! Me and Cerys being the hardy Northerners that we are decided to go for a swim along with only two others from the group (Americans). It was ffrreeeeeezzinggg but amazing at the same time as we got to swim under the falls. We also went for another swim in Dinner Falls and were the only ones showing our Northern grit :P.
We got back at 6pm, showered, had our free dinner and then went out with the others in our room, Laura, Chris, Ross and Alberto the crazy kickboxing Italian! We had an amazing night in Rhinobar (unlimited drinks 10-11 for $10) and Giligans. Cerys was up dropping her shapes with Laura and even got the four lads up for a wiggle (including me :P). We had an amazing night until we got home.
We're only going to tell this once so read carefully hehe. Unfortuantly when we arrived back at 3 am, we had been broken into and by no fault of ours. The private room attached to ours which was locked had a window open and two guys witha knife and crowbar came into the room six times, taking over $5000 worth of stuff. They had removed most of the bags in the room and dumped them under the house next door where we managed to get some stuff back. The worst part for us is that Cerys' handbag was taken which had our memory stick with ALL of our photos from November to Fraser Island so we've lost a lot of photos that we didn't get to upload. Cerys has lost her brick ipod and DS but most importantly Honey and her new Me to You bee. The police have a full report and we are going to start our insurance claim as soon as we can. We were just lucky that we weren't in the room and we had our bank cards and passports on us. Other than that Cairns was great and we're off to the rainforest next!
