Set our alarm at 9:58 so that we had 2 minutes to make it downstairs for our free breakfast. Had the usual chocolate bannana pancakes - definitely a tradition that I wish to continue when i get back home!! Josh, Seb Kristina and I decided to take out mopeds to explore the town (SORRY MUM!) Seb taught me how to drive one in about 30 seconds and then we were off. I was amazed at how easy it was to pick up! For the first leg I drove with Kristina on the back. We drove around the outsirts of the citadel and went to a pagoda a short drive from town, after a couple of photos we returned back to the hostel for lunch (with kk behind the wheel this time). After lunch we aimed to go to some mausoleums, with Seb leading the way. After about 20 minutes we arrived at a concrete platform that proved not to have any sort of cultural value so we headed on. We only had about 15 mins before it shut so the long winding roads felt like they went on for miles. We arrived with 2 minutes to spare and after pursuading the ticket man to let us in we climbed the steps only to have the security guard shut them in our face! Got a picture through the railings and headed home. It was a shame that we didn't make it in but it was 100% worth the ride, and also only a week into our trip im sure there are many more temples to come!! Driving home was a bit scary as I was sure our tank was running on empty buy the boys pursuaded us we were fine, only to arrive back at the hostel to find josh had run out of fuel and was walking his ped home!!
In the evening we decided to go out for a curry as a dorm and then ended up in browneyes. We spent the evening being told stories by the Australian bar man from the hostel. He taught us all about hoop snakes and drop bears which attack backpackers in Australia, both which proved to be entirely fictional!
Next morning was our last in Hue, so we were up early and went with Josh to the Citadel. The citadel was built in 1804 as the palace for the emperor Nguyễn Phúc Ánh. In the citadel was Quang Duc's car. Thich Quang Duc was a Vietnamese Mahayana Buddhist monk who burned himself to death at a busy Saigon road intersection on 11 June 1963. Quang Duc was protesting about the persecution of Buddhists by the South Vietnamese government. We also saw elephants in the grounds - which was really cool. We had to get back sharpish for our bus to Hoi An.
