We arrived in Rainbow beach ready for our 4WD ozzy island little adventure. I have spoken to a lot of people about traveling Australia and all have raved about on about how fantastic Fraser island is, so my expectations where pretty high before we even started. We met with our group and did some shopping for supplies namely goon, beer bbq stuff and the staple diet of every traveler....pasta yum!! We were really lucky with the people in our group as a mass percentage where from or lived in Manchester!! We also had a lovely couple from Glastenbury and two dutch girls who were great fun and gave James (one of the more vocal boys in our group) a run for his money which provided us with hours of entertainment!!
When we went to go pick up and pack our car and esky the guys at the shop go on and on about snakes spiders the usual scare stories. They also tell us about the dingos (they look just like regular dogs) and how they are not I repeat notcute little dogs and we are not aloud to feed them or leave out food ats they may just come and bite you on the bum, shame. Any way just to add a little more scare they also tell us not to swim in the ocean as its filed with man hungry sharks. You only have to mention it and thats enoough to keep me out of the water but just to be sure the guy pulls out a picture to seal the deal. On the picture taken from a view point called indian head are a couple cudling in the water and behind them is a great huge massive scary shark. So thats us all well and truely out the water then!
The tour is self drive but we did have a itinery to follow also just because you drive on the beach and have to be aware of all the tide times. First stop on the itinary was lake McEnzie and we were to stay there the whole afternoon. After some very skilled driving from the boys (Thank you for not getting us stuck in the sand!) and a very bumpy ride we arrive. Andy was ahead of the group and when he saw the lake he shouted back to us 'its amazing" and I just thought really is it though how can a lake be amazing!! That is until I saw it, we all flung our stuff down and were straight in. The lake looks just like a paradise beach white sand and the bluest of waters. The sand is so fine and the water is so pure with no salt to make your hair stick together or your eyes itch yey! We spent most the afternoon lazing in the sun and swimming. My only regret is that we might never go there again as it was so amazing and if any one gets the chance they have to go.
That night we set up camp, yes I said camp as in tents an all (Feel so brave!) and cooked our barby and made a start on the goon and beer. Then the drinkling games started. Fuzzy duck/ ducky fuzz much easier to write than it is to say! Andy proved that he is even worse than me at drinking games I don't now how it is humanly possible for him to loose so many times, but it did make me feel pretty smug as he normally wins every thing. Any way the usual drunkenness followed the goon got smaked and then there was the standard nakedness from the boys, typical and predictable but always amusing for us girlys!
Bit of a an early morning the next day think the thirst woke us all up!! We headed off to another Lake with a huge sandune that we all rolled down and ended up in the water. This time the water was the brightest green ever and I was a little less eager to get in but once I did it was great we even saw some fish. We headed on to Indian head which is a look out point over the sea. The walk up was loads of fun but I have never seen such big ugly spiders on the way! Once at the top we managed to see a little shark( it looked small enough but then we were really high up so I wouldn't like to find out just how big it really was!) And we also saw a mantra wray.
That night we were all a bit less excited for the drinking games I think we were all suffering badly from the night before. We camped just behind the beach and when it got dark we all went on to the beach for some star gazing. The sky is full of stars at night and now I know where orions belt is ; ) When we got back to our camp we coud see the dingos had been sniffing around so it was toliet duty in 2s just to be sure. They may look like harmless dogs but apparently they have a temper so we didn't want to risk it.
The next day we went to Ely creek. A little lazy river which you walk up and float back, sandwhich eating and sunbathing rounded off the day perfectly and no one wanted to leave...except the girls maybe as we was dying for toliets and showers! We got to the ferry in time and managed to get back in one peice with no fines phew. Definately a must do on the hit list for Ozzy we met some great people and had such a good time I wish we could go back.
