The home of the tube!
Next stop on the Laos trail was the infamous vang vieng. Although a lot quieter than in the past, this odd little town still does a good party. Arriving on the Friday we were told it was jungle party night. Gonna be honest, more party than jungle. It was actually in the back of someone's guesthouse. Not really worth 40,000kip but i had a good night.
Next day was the big day. Tubing! Really simple, you hire your big tyres from anyone in town and they drive up to the first bar up the river. Then you have a few drinks in each bar and float down the river between bars. Back in the hay day there were near 30 bars whereas now there are 4. The party is still fun though just risk free! Only word of warning is don't stay out too late as you lose your deposit and it gets pretty chilly!
Second day I hung out at the blue lagoon. A resort style hangout a few km out of town. I'd advice a tuk tuk. You can cycle the 7km however the road is bumpy to say the least! Fun for swimming, volleyball and some cool caves!
Now for a bit of advice. Places to stay: boutang hotel. Is a hotel at hostel price. Places to eat: otherwise bar, riverview bar or Milan's pizza. Whatever you do, don't stay at easy go hostel in the dorm rooms (privates are ok). The shower doesn't ever work, ie no water actually comes out. And the toilet you are literally walking in others excrement or fighting off hundreds of Mosquitos. Not fun. Pay a bit extra and stay somewhere liveable. But vang vieng is fun for a couple of days. There is also a lot of cool kayaking tours, because despite all the drink and high tourists the surroundings are beautiful!
