It is getting colder and colder in the morning. Winter is around the corner. We had a short drive to Santa Fe NM so we were going to take advantage of the continental breakfast that the folks at American RV Park host. Walt and Barb were going to fuel up first and meet us at the clubhouse. We there promptly at 8am, but so were 20 other people. Walt and Barb were already there, which we thought they would be a little late, because Walt was going into town where diesel was 40 cents less. It appears that the road they took was closed due to a police matter and they had to turn around.
After breakfast, we loaded up and headed out around 9:30am. We were looking forward to taking the Turquoise Trail, a scenic byway route to Santa Fe. We relied on Siri, again, to get us on the right track. She had us going on the old Route 66 heading in the right direction, but on the wrong road. So we had to back track, again, to get on Hwy 14. We were enjoying the scenery and both vehicles were handling the elevation climb. Then, the Beast's turbo didn't kick in again, but he recovered quickly. Whew. Remember the movie, "Wild Hogs" with Tim Allen, John Travolta, and Martin Lawrence? Madrid, one of the towns featured in the film is on the Turquoise Trail. It really looks like it does in the film.
We arrived at the Santa Fe Skies RV Park in Santa Fe around 11:00am. We would have to classify this RV Park as the most Artsy Park we have stayed at. There were art sculptures throughout the park, creations of the owner and his son. Also, there was a small area dedicated to odd machinery that the family has collected over the years. Very fun.
We headed to old town for lunch. The receptionist at the RV Park recommended a couple of places. One to eat at and one to have a drink. The restaurant for eats was "The Shed" , specializing in creative New Mexican cooking. This is one of the most popular places to lunch in Santa Fe. We had to wait, but it was worth it. The green chili soup was super good. It is housed in a maze of connected rooms with really low doorways. Anyone over the height of 5'6" better be prepared to duck.
After lunch, we walked through town to the old Rail Station. It was a longer walk than we thought, but that was where Tomasitas was located. They are known for the Frog and Squirrel, blended Margaritas with an added punch of Grand Marnier (Frog) and Sangria (Squirrel). They are so potent, they have a limit of 2 per person. We shared a Squirrel among us. It was VERY good. We all had a slight stagger as we headed back to the truck.
Back at camp, we relaxed and planned to meet at 5:30pm to play cards before dinner at the Skinners. Walt's and Barb's site was right in front of the office. It was an ideal place to watch the parade of the Snowbirds from Canada roll into camp in their monster motorhomes on their way south. We counted 6 in one caravan. The temperature was dropping so we moved in to finish our card game and have dinner. Walt served up cod with a piccata sauce, grilled asparagus, and a salad. Another fine meal.
Tomorrow, we head for Taos NM
