We can't decide if we prefer warm or cold weather. Today, we all preferred warm weather. It was 46 degrees when we left Amarillo TX heading for Albuquerque. Again, it was a straight shot on HWY 40.
One thing that we found out that is consistent in this area is Wind. On either side, there were oodles of windmills. Cattle were grazing around them. Some were in the middle of cotton and corn fields....just all over. . These tall giants appeared to be skinny tumbleweeds doing cartwheels across the landscape. Others just stood tall braced against the wind practicing their arabesque position. They were mesmerizing to watch.
Bob and I trade off driving every two hours. It was my turn to drive. We pulled into a dilapidated gas station to make the switch soon after we crossed the New Mexico border. It was eerie. It reminded me of a gas station scene of a movie that I remember seeing, but I can't recall the name of the movie, where this creepy guy is sitting quietly behind the counter, then gets up and locks the door trapping this girl inside..... I was hesitant to buy a cup of coffee...which I did, but immediately discarded it. The theme of Twilight Zone started to play in my head...Best to get back on the road.....fast.
We continued to fight the wind jockeying for a poisition between big rigs and a 26ft motorhome that straddled the middle line and continually got pulled into the draft of the big rigs. I tried to stay in front of the motorhome and was doing a good job until Walt all of sudden started to slow down. I was behind him and put on the hazard lights to warn all the approaching rigs that we were crawling. We radioed Walt. He didn't know what was going on with the Beast. It appears the turbo wasn't kicking in. We eventually pulled over to let the Beast rest. After a few minutes, all was good. The Beast caught his breath and we were, again, zipping down the highway.
We arrived at the American RV Resort located on the top of a mesa just off of Hwy 40. Nice park. They even served a complimentary continental breakfast, which was not the norm for RV parks. It had nice grass patches and satellite reception was great, which was a priority so we could watch the final debate.
Before we could explore Albuquerque, Bob had a priority. He realized that he didn't bring enough pills of another medicine and had to find a CVS pharmacy to get additional pills. The office told us that there was one just three stop lights down on Unser. I looked up the phone number for a CVS pharmacy on Unser. Bob called. They could refill it and it would be ready in 30 minutes. FUBAR for Bob.
We loaded into the Beast and headed out. Our plan was to visit the Petroglyph National Monument, then head down to Old Town Albuquerque, and finally, pick up Bob's prescription before heading back to camp to enjoy a Walt Meal. We should have learned by now not to soley rely on Siri to get us to our destination. This time, she was half right. She led us to the Volcano Hiking trail and not to the Visitor Center, which was about 11 miles on the other side of the hiking area. We amended our route and arrived about 20 minutes later. We watched the film, which was an excellent film about how the valley was formed and showed a sampling of the thousands petroglyphs that can be found throughout the length of the 17 mile rift wall.
Second stop: Old Town Albuquerque. We parked the Beast and walked to the Visitors Center to gather information on Albuquerque and the surrounding area. The docent gave us information on the Turquoise Trail, a more scenic route to Santa Fe, which sounded great. We walked around the plaza and admired all the hanging Chili Ristras, checked out a few shops, and admired the San Felipe de Neri Church, one of the oldest buildings in Albuquerque.
Third stop: CVS Pharmacy. Oops. There were two CVS Pharmacies on Unser. I inadvertently called the one that was 10 miles away from where we were staying. So, what we thought would be a quick stop with plenty of time for Walt and Barb to prepare dinner, turned out to be an hour or so spent in rush hour traffic. It looks like it will be a Pizza Night. FUBAR for me.
We ordered Pizza to be delivered from Amadeo's Pizza & Subs. It arrived in time for the Debate. We enjoyed our pizza. No comment on the Debate. This is non-partisan blog.
We called it a night. Tomorrow, we head for Santa Fe NM.
