We woke to the soft hum of motors of boats pulling out for a morning of fishing. It was a continuous parade of boaters dropping their boats into the water. We waved and wished them luck in catching the big one, hopefully, it would be a grouper..not a shark.
We took off around 7:30am hoping we were not being stupid to head further south and to a place that had only one way in and out and not alot of land knowing Matthew was looming not too far away out at sea. We continued to monitor the weather and felt confident that if we were being stupid so were all the other folks heading in in the same direction. We be jammin' to the Keys.
Remember the film with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis, "True Lies" and that scene over the long bridge in the keys? That was our initial vision of what it would be like driving out to the keys...minus the road bombings and fighter jet crash. Actually, the bridges between the keys were not that long.
We heard it was very difficult to find RV parks with full hookups that could accommodate large RVs with slideouts close to Key West. So we were excited that we found Blue Water RV Park, "the most beautiful and luxurious RV Resort in the Keys". That it was and worth every penny that we paid for two nights. We went from the funkiest RV Park to the Swankiest RV Park. Each site is individually owned and rented out if the owner is absent. They all have patios covered by Tiki Huts. Most have outdoor kitchens and flat screen televisions. Not that we were going to buy a site, but the boys were speculating on the price and guessed that ours would go for $100K. Would you believe sites range anywhere from $350K to $1,200K? Interested? Go to their website and check out the listings.
We arrived early enough to check out Key West, which was 14 miles from where we were staying, and a place to eat dinner. We drove down Duval Street, which is the main street in old Key West and found a parking lot just off Caroline Street to park the Beast. The cost - $10.
This is a really laid back town. Stores open whenever. Anything goes for clothes and hair. A new store, Blanc du Nil (White Nile) just opened and they were promoting it by selling any item in the store for $25 the first week. Everything was white cotton. Score for Bob. He bought a shirt. I also scored a Hard Rock Cafe pin. We walked down Duval for a bit until it started to rain. We decided to come back the next day for lunch and more exploring.
We drove back to camp to relax by the pool and take advantage of our deluxe digs before heading to dinner at the Geiger Key Smokehouse Bar & Grill.
The Gieger Key Smokehouse Bar & Grill is located at the Geiger Marina. We would never have considered it, but the receptionist said it is one of the best kept secrets of the keys. It was tucked behind the marina. The tables were picnic tables precariously close to the water. It was a wondrous evening. A Indie type musician was playing soft renditions of Kyle Andrews songs. The food was suburb. We supped on blacken grouper, Conch Chowder, Hogfish Tacos and for dessert...one slice of Key Lime Pie shared. We will sleep well tonight.
Tomorrow, an in-depth exploration of Key West.
