This was a very looong day. We left New Orleans at 7:11am and if we traveled the speed limit with no issues and no stops, we should arrive at East Point FL around 2:15pm. This was a four state day.
Second State: Mississippi. There just happened to be a Hard Rock Hotel in Biloxi MS, which was only 15 minutes off HWY 10. Biloxi has had it's share of challenges. First, Hurricane Camille in 1969, then, Katrina in 2005. Luckily, the beautiful beaches were not damaged and they now provide a fantastic setting for a haven of casinos. We weren't sure about parking for RVs so Walt and Barb parked their RV at a service station and came aboard with us. I scored a Hard Rock pin and a Starbucks coffee.
Third State: Alabama. We just couldn't pass through without putting "boots on the ground". The last stop before crossing into Florida was the "Oasis Travel Center". The timing was right for a "watering" stop.
Fourth State: Florida. The Florida panhandle is really beautiful. I can see why folks would rather rebuild every year instead of leaving and finding a more protected area to live.
It was nearing lunch time and Walt had his heart set on a Whataburger. Today was the day. OMG, for $5.95 for the meal, it was REALLY good. In n Out Burger better hope the chain doesn't come out west. As we were waddling out of the Whataburger restaurant, Bob became the hero to a sweet 98 year old that was having difficulty getting into her daughter's car. As a reward, he received a kiss on the cheek and a wonderful smile.
We continued on Highway 10 until the intersection of 71. We wound our way through the Apalachicola National Forest of slash pines and exited onto Hwy 98. About a quarter mile west of the turnoff, was Coastline RV park, our stop for the evening. Arrival time....5:09pm just missing Walt's Happy Hour deadline. This is a very small park, only 48 spaces, but it definitely earned a five-star rating from us. The location, ambiance, condition, and services were way above average.
We finished off the evening with a card game before a meal of salmon, orzo salad, and sauteed veggies compliments of Bob and me. For entertainment, a million butterflies flitted around shrubs along the bay with an amazing sunset for a backdrop.
Tomorrow, we head for St. Petersburg, Florida to meet up with my son, Andrew, and his delightful wife, Liza.
