Ok so the updates have been very few and far between, but internet access has been terrible and we have been a little bit busy.
Since San Francisco we trekked to Lake Tahoe for a few days, it was a nice place but we were there out of season. I imagine it must be great when they have snow.
After Tahoe we decided it was time for some National Parks.
We went to Lassen Volcanic Park, lots of bubbling mud pools and rotten gas smells.
Then it was Lava Beds National Park. This place was brilliant. Hundreds of caves created by rivers of Lava. You report to the visitors centre, they give you a torch and platic helmet and a list of the caves and off you go. Into the caves all by yourself. The first cave they recommend to get you used to it is not very far down and it had tiny lights along the walkway, caving 101. Stupidly we thought the rest would be the same. NO! After that you are on your own. You climb down the ladders and within a few steps are under ground, in the pitch black can't even see your hand in front of your face dark. The entrances were easy and then the caves got harder depending on which one you were in. Some you had to crawl through tunnels, some you were squatting, some you had to walk hunched over, and every single one of them had creatures just like the movie The Descent. Why is that all I could think about as soon as we got under ground was that stupid movie?! I scared the crap out of myself. I was jumpy and swinging my flashlight around like I was at a rave. And it made matters worse that the park was empty, we were in these caves all by our lonesomes...well obvioulsy apart from the psycho, flesh eating creatures that were stalking me.
Luckily we survived and headed up to Crater Lake. This place just can't be described. Your driving through the park and then come across this magnificent blue lake, in what used to be a Volcano. The weather was perfect and we had incredible reflections on the lake while we were there, and apart from bears ( which we didn't see) no flesh eating creatures to stalk me.
After the parks some rest was on the cards, so we hired a cottage on the Oregon coast for 3 nights.
We walked the beaches, had open fires, toasted marshmallows, watched shooting stars and read. This holidaying is HARD work! Then after three days the landlord had to come and physically remove us...so much for squatters rights. Why couldn't he have just let us stay forever?
Tomorrow...Mt St Helens National Park and some more volcano action. Oh and hopefully a romantic dinner for our 3rd anniversary, somewhere that does not have a drive thru ( hint hint Jeremy)
