Today was our day to see the Eiffel Tower. After tackling the Paris metro again, we arrived at Parc Du Champ De Mars, which is the park that leads toward the Tower itself. Very quickly we realised that the day was C-O-L-D!! Much colder than we expected given the day before and certainly much colder and windier than what we'd dressed for. After getting ripped off by one if the local cartoonists, we headed for the Tower. Or more accurately, the queue for the stairs to climb the Tower! After the obligatory wait that we're now very used to, we made our way up the stairs to the first level of the Eiffel Tower at 57m. Not being a great fan of heights, it was a big effort for Case so we made our way to the cafe for a cup of hot soup to calm the nerves. Soup complete and body temperatures now back into the mid 30's, we tackled a walk around level one to look at the views. After looking down once and freezing for 10 mins, Case wisely chose to sit out the climb to the second and third levels. While the views were spectacular from the top (280ish metres), it got very windy and even colder and the elevator from the 2nd to 3rd floors is definitely not designed for people with a fear of heights!
The climb down was a little worse (the stairs are see through), so by the time we got to the bottom Case's nerves were shot and we were both freezing. So back to the room to don the thermals and then off to one of the international train stations to organise the next leg of our extravaganza. Train tickets to Switzerland! After more queuing we had the tickets in our cold little hands, off to a cafe for dinner and back to the room to organise a hire car for some exploring tomorrow.
