Today, as discussed the night before a few of us had decided it would be fun to rent a car and drive down to Gibraltar and see some monkeys.
The day was not off to a great start. It took until 1pm to get the group organized to go to the car rental. But Bo, cecilie, rob, Rex and I took off for the the train station. After getting lost a little bit we were dismayed to find out that it was going to be much more expensive than we thought but still worked out to less then 20e a person so much cheaper than a tour or a bus by ourselves. After paying rob realized He had forgotten his debit card in the ATM and had to run back and go get it. Nobody had cell phones so we agreed to meet at the rental car which turned out to be in a completely different location then we were told so rob didn't find us for a half hour.
We finally get going after what felt like a million smoke breaks. Rob was driving and the 3 girls were in the back. We drove along the coast which was covered with picturesque beach houses with terra cotta roofs and pastel in color.
On the way there cecilie began to feel sick. We couldn't bring the rental car to Gibraltar so we parked it at the border and cecilie decided she didn't want to go with us because it was a lot of walking. I felt bad because we knew we'd be gone a while.
After the easiest border crossing ever we were excited to be in Gibraltar. We walked to the cable car lift across down and took it up the mountain.
The monkeys were so exciting. They were very social and friendly and actually started pulling on robs pants because he had a plastic bag in his pocket. The higher we climbed in the complex the more spectacular the views became.
Rob is a photography lover and was thrilled to take my camera off my hands for a few minutes. He got some really great shots. It turns out that all of our delays paid off because we were almost the only ones at the attraction and the photos were even more spectacular because of the sunset. It was fantastic.
We had been planning on taking the cable car back down and we knew the last one went down at 745 so at 740 when we got to the station we were pissed to see the last one had gone down and we were actually locked on the reserve with the monkeys and all the employees had left. So we took some more pictures and enjoyed everything. There was a bit of a panic when we couldn't find an exit but Rex scaled a fence and he and rob helped bo and I over. On the other side was an abandoned military base that we were able to check out. Here I had my first experience of vertigo ever. Rob had asked me to hang my legs over the edge of a building because it would make a cool picture. I finally understand how people who are scared of heights feel because I honestly thought I was going to throw up. I grabbed bo's arm and inched my way forward but all in all I was pathetic about the whole thing.
On the walk down we ran into some really cheeky monkeys who climbed on us and really liked bo. One jumped on her shoulder and pulled her hair.
It Took us about 2 hours to get down but we all had a lot of fun. Finally the hunt for food was on! We wanted English food but it was hard to find one still serving food (f***ing uk) so we ended up eating at a Indian take away restaurant which was the best Indian food I've ever had. You could watch them make the food right behind the counter with fresh looking ingredients.
The drive home wasn't to eventful and we only got a little lost.
We made it home at about 3am and chalked it up to a very good day.
