A day sat on the premier bus service 7.25am to 5.30pm, through scenery I have already seen whilst driving up the coast in the camper. I arrive in Airlee beach to find that bad weather is forecast and it doesn't look like the boats will be going out.The lady in the internet café is really rude and my hostel is pretty manky. So I head to bed feeling pretty despondent!
The next morning the weather isn't showing any signs of improvement, so I set about thinking up a plan B, when all of a sudden the sun comes out and the boats are back on - hoorah! So I set off in search of supplies for my 4 days on board, which predominately consists of wine!
I had chosen a boat called Spank Me, an ex racing yacht that holds 20 odd guests plus 5 crew. I loved the sailing, it was the best bit, it was a great feeling when those sails went up and we literally went where the wind took us. I spent most of the 4 days up on deck as being below deck in the weather was most definitely the quickest way for me to be sick. I even slept on deck one night up in the sail. We had some pretty rough weather which meant we had to jam ourselves up against something whilst sat up top so we didn't roll off into the water below. If you sat on the suicide side, the one closest to the water you literally were almost dunked under every time a big wave came our way. I don't think I've ever seen such big waves out at sea. The evenings were great fun, I met some great people and we spent our time learning random new drinking games, generally keeping the other boats moored anywhere near us up all night. I also lucked out in the sleeping arrangement, which were all little bunk beds set up in lines (reminded me a bit of red dwarf) and because I was travelling alone I got a double all to myself, starfish sleeping was definitely the order of the trip. My favourite time of the day was when most people were still sleeping off their hangovers at 6-7am when I could go up and sit on deck watching the sunrise over in the distance, very peaceful.Over the 4 days I went diving and snorkelling everyday and one day we got dropped off on a little island for a spot of sunbathing and swimming, in our oh so sexy stinger suits!
My time on the boat would only have been made better if my big toe hadn't got infected. Lucky for me there was a GP on board, Ken from Scotland who looked after me and my toe very well for which I thank him. By the time I got off the boat I was in soo much pain I hobbled straight to the doctors - 2 sets of antibiotics, lots of sock wearing and a trip to the hospital later it's definitely on the mend. I have also decided I need to do more sailing and could do this trip thousands of times without getting bored of it! Fun Fun Fun!!
