Caroline's World Tour
Today has been a truly adorable day - we went to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary about half an hour away from town where you can get right up close to the koalas and kangaroos. We even got to hold a koala (I have photographic evidence, I will put it on the sight asap!). They're very cute, but I couldn't help feel a tiny bit uncomfortable with it in my arms, and if honest, was quite glad when his handler took him back! He was adorable though, called Kakadu (we think) and very, very sleepy - he pretty much just dozes off as soon as he settles into someone's arms! We also went to the koala presentation and had the truly strange experience of seeing koalas fighting - not something you expect from creatures that sleep 20 hours a day!
We also got to get up close to the kangaroos - they're in a big enclosure and you can buy food to feed them - they know what's coming and perk up as soon as they see the little bags! The little ones were very gentle - I did feed one big one but I felt like he was nibbling on my hand so I decided to give the rest of the big ones a miss - some of them are as tall as I am!! Apart from koalas and kangaroos we also saw a freshwater crocodile, emus, and lots of different birds - including a talking cockatoo! We went to the bird of prey show (I had to get up and help, the handler gave me a little bit of a mouse to entice a barn owl called Shannon over, it was so horrible!) and the sheep dog show, so it was a busy day! It was really worth the visit - we decided to forgo Steve Irwin's zoo in favour of this and I think it was worth it!
Yesterday we painted our boomerangs which was also very good fun! It was a bit stressful at first cause I had no idea what to put on it, but they give you books of patterns and the guys that work there will draw things on it that you can then paint over. I still don't have much faith in my talents as an artist but once it was all painted over and varnished it actually looked alright!
Tomorrow we've got another early start, this time for our journey to Hervey Bay, from there we're going on our trip to Fraser Island. Its going to be very different from most of the things we've done so far (the dreaded camping...) but I'm sure it will be fun! No internet access though so it may be a while before I get to tell you all about it!!
