Caroline's Travels
Carnaval in Olinda and Recife Old Town was amazing! Five days of solid partying and you'll be glad to know we did the Brits proud! We were out there everyday and every night. However, that was mainly because we thought everyone else on our bus tour was doing the same, and were beginning to wonder how they were all coping and not looking quite as tired as we were! It was about the 4th day we realised that we were the only people hardcoring it and everyone else was alternating their partying so that they only went out once. How hardcore were we!! They did actually ask us if we were on drugs because we were always partying - Britian - 1, Brasil - 0!!
Carnaval is actually crazy there was 1.5million people in this tiny town all going crazy, wearing fancy dress, spraying water (or what we hoped was water!) from their water guns, drinking - but mainly kissing!! It was kind of a culture shock. Pryscilla had warned me about the "Beija" or kiss circles that happen at Carnaval when a group of blokes surround a girl and then all kiss her whether she wants to or not.
We were sure we could avoid a beija situation, no problems! However, having made it about 10 metres and 20 seconds into Carnaval I got the Beija experience before I knew it! The streets were so crowded and people were so mental ( I even lost my flip-flop for a worrying 10mins!), that we had to develop the "Carnaval faces" as displayed on the photo albums to try and get through the crowds at a quicker pace - beautiful!!
There was one street at Carnaval where we walked down and were like - wow! All the blokes there were so good looking, we soon found out that this was gay street - typical!
Another favourite street of ours was in Recife, where we went at night time. We lovingly called it freak street on account of its extrmely dodgy nature and equally dodgy patrons! I've never seen anything quite so strange as a dingy back street, lined with motorbikes, blasting out trance and dance music with loads of goths dancing a kind of freaky rock and roll. Well, even though it was probably the most dangerous place to be in Carnaval, me and Katy embraced the weirdness and busted a few David Brent moves. I think they were all suitably impressed!!
Carnaval was so random and amazing its kind of difficult to sum it all up! - However, Katy has managed to do just this in her 3000 essay (no exaggeration) that she wrote on her travel journal, so if you want to know more, just click on!
