Cancun down to Honduras has been a bit of a whirl wind. When I last wrote we were blinded by the lights of Cancun and were heading over to Mujeres with Miss Annabel chips and beans Yeoman and Rob, a guy who was staying in here hostel...for those of you who dont know who Annabel is, she is a friend of Wills from back home and also cousin to Edward Yeoman. So just 30 minutes off the coast of cancun and we couldnt feel further away from the place...
This small little island is easily travelled around in 1 hour by golf cart (which at 10 miles an hour can still flip when being driven by Will going around a corner...dont worry no one was hurt apart from the girl whose foot it landed on). Here we checked into ´the best hostel in Mexico´, which probably wasnt reviewed the day the french moved in and decided a full blown religious, political and economical discussion which was obviously imperative to have at 3am.... On the way out we sat on the front of the boat to sun ourselves, so on the way back we thought, hey we should do the same thing...I tell you what makes an English man English is when he is being soaked by waves crashing over the boat every 30 seconds so that you cant see, your bag which holds all your worldly belongings in has swan off somewhere, you are wearing a snorkle mask so that you can see and your clothes look like youve just entered one of Cancuns wet Tshirt competitions and come 1st and you STILL refuse to go inside incase the Mexicans laugh at the stupid gringos.
So after a few days of snorkling around the island and Rob self medicating himself for spider bites at the local hospital ´yeah Id like a drip, and why not some more pills...´ we headed back to mainland and down south to Tullum. Tullum is on the coast and is the site of a beautiful Mayan Ruin which juts out to see and makes an incredible impression on any oncoming boats. Also here our youth hostel lent us bikes so that we could cycle a good hour round trip in 35 degree heat (not ideal) to swim in the Grand Cynote. A Cynote is effectively an underground lake surrounded by milestone which has collapsed forming a cave of cold fresh water. Here we dived around staligtites...or mites, I can never remember. This was so beautiful, the water was crystal clear and so deep, swimming deep into the cave was a bit scary because it got so dark and I did think that the lights coming up below us were super glowing fish until I realised that they were divers with torches, obviously.
So from here we said goodbye to our fellow travellers and set off down to Belize. We decided to cut the trip in half by stopping in Bacalar. At this fresh water lagoon we stayed in Casa de Carolina, where a beautiful law spread down to a lake with crocodiles in it... I was told ´just swish the water around a lot to scare them away if you want to swim´ but you know what, I decided to give it a miss. Waking up at 6am to watch the sunrise over the flat lake was absolutely amazing. We only planned to stay here for one night but we met a group of people (mainly retired, but great fun and very friendly) who had all moved down here to retire next to the lake. One of these guys, called Jimmy offered to take us out on his sailing boat and show us the lake the next day so with an offer like this we couldnt refuse. Jimmy moved down here so that his wife could set up a hospital for the poor and also it would seem to take in as many stray lame animals as possible. We were taken all around the bay in his boat, refusing to turn the motor on, even when we got stuck in sinking sand for 30minutes! he showed us the fortress which was built by the spanish to stop the English Pirates invading. Apparently the Mayans were trading all around this Lagoon with the English, because they would rather give their gold to the English than have it stolen by the spanish! The way to get down the lagoon from the sea is far and complicated and the would of had to go through swamps and heavily forested areas of river to get up this far. We were also taken to an area which has sulphur sand. Jimmy promised us that if we rubbed sulphur sand on us and waited until it dried we would have amazing skin, I think it mainly just made us stink of dead fish and eggs though!
So, the lagoon was a great stop and find that we wernt expecting but we needed to get on to Belize...
HOWEVER my Spanish housemate has now been waiting for me to get off the computer for half an hour so I must go, but i will try and update (or Will will) asap!!
