Day 11- >Antibes
Most of the day today was spent driving from Barcelona back into France. We are near Nice now, the weather is scorching everywhere thus far, and our accomodations and food have been great! This morning, we had a flat tire! However, our driver Jeremy is highly exceptional and still got us to our lunch stop in Arles, France on time. Arles was a really small town with a Roman theatre much like the Colleseum and was very nice and old looking. Our actual home is close to a place called Antibes...its near the coast so we have access to beaches, very pretty ones I have heard. I didnt get a chance to check that part out, as I have "dishie" duty (I take peoples plates and wash them after our meals..not too difficult with 3 others and a site rep to help out!!) here and supper was soon after we arrived. After dinner, Kallee and I did laundry by hand-an exciting accomplishment!- then joined everyone else enjoying the bar here for a bit before bed.
Day 12- Nice
Today was tour day in Nice! It is an absolutely gorgeous city, with pebble beaches, old fashioned streets, and lots to see. Nice just has a different feel; its still touristy but in a quiet way. Wonderful. Before we actually got to Nice though, we went to a French perfumery, and got a demo on how they made their parfumes, very smelly! After Josh and Jer dropped us off in the city, Melissa, Kallee and I set off for the Marc Chagall museum of modern art, stopping to eat the best sandwhich Ive had in France, and some random supply shopping. The museum was very nice and had some beautiful paintings and stained glass. Afterwards, we walked back to our pickup spot, going through the "Old Town" as we went. The streets are meant only for people and are very narrow, with shops of scrumptious gelato and other food, jewellery, souviners, and clothes lining both sides. Lovely! Once we got back to our drop off spot, we found shade from the 30 some degree weather under a palm tree-yes, in France!- and waited. That night, we went to Monaco, a small principality within France, meant only for the rich and famous. Here, we went to the Monte Carlo Casino; super ritzy and a great experience. It was definitely an ordeal in itself to see people putting 1000 euro chips down on the roulette table without blinking an eye! And the cars around there!!!....amazing. Within 10 minutes of being there, we saw around 10 Ferraris, and other high rolling cars.....nuts. Speaking of cars, Monaco is also where the Formula Grande Prix is/was held, and we saw the apparently famous hairpin turn. The hotel rooms that have a view of the turn go for 20000 euro during the race, and are booked years in advance. The turn is too sharp for a Contiki coach to handle, so we couldnt drive very far on the track to the casino...a previous driver tried to make the turn, Josh said, and ended us having to get a crane to get it out! But back to the casino...the under 21s didnt get to bet, but walking around was good enough for me! One of the guys on our tour won 200 euro! We all say its because he got pooped on by birds twice in the last few days, haha. Johnny bought a few of us drinks, spending half of his winnings, which was nice for him to do for sure! After about an hour and a half at the casino, we went back to reality and the campsite. There were two birthdays that were celebrated and everyone had a good time.
