An early start today after the crazy night before really hurt, but it was sunny and not raining so that made it abit better. There ended up being two buses that were going to Sydney and me and Rich were put on one bus and our friends from before were all put onto the other bus, which really sucked. We did so much driving today, it was so boring. But we did stop at Squeaky Beach (which really did squeak when you walked on it) and 90 Mile Beach which is actually a rough estimate as to how long the beach is. It was called 90 Mile Beach years ago when they guessed the length. It is actually about 100+ miles long. This beach is in a town called Lakes Entrance which is where the YHA was where we were staying that night. That night we spoke to the drivers and managed to get them to let us go on the other bus with our mates.
The bus we got on that morning with our friends was so much better than the one we were on before - the driver was just more entertaining and had us all singing to old Aussie folk songs. That day we drove past so much lovely scenery to the Snowy Mountains (where there is a massive ski resort). Here we did a hike towards one of the massive lakes over the mountains, we had to cross a river using the rocks - I nearly fell in (on the way back I did fall in, so my boot got really soaked). However half way up the mountain the weather really turned for the worst, I've never seen so much rain (and that's with living in England). Some of the group turned back but about 6 of us carried on for another quarter of it, but the rain just got so much worse so we had to stop and head back. We all got so wet, all the way through. That is also how my foot slipped into the river; the rocks were wet and slippery. After that we headed to Jimbalya where we stayed in a hotel. It had a sauna and a swimming pool, it was so good. And for dinner we had the biggest steak I've ever seen.
The next day was basically just driving and lots of it. We eventually got to Canberra and visited Parliament House, which is pretty impressive but also far too new; it doesn't really have much character. We also went to the War Memorial, which was a really big building. It was kind of set out like a museum. Rich wasn't that keen on it as he said it was far too modern, but I really liked how the names of the dead were set out along a wall and had poppies attached to it if people had been and visited a certain name. After that there was the really looooong drive to Sydney. In the evening we went out for a meal with our friends from the bus, and to say goodbye to them as they were going home in a couple of days.
