Amazon jungle - Cuyabeno nature reserve
After a very early alarm we headed back to Quito airport for our 4 day trip to the jungle. On arrival we were told that our airline didn't operate from the main airport but we had to walk outside the building and along the street to find them! Well, all of the buildings seemed to be for freight but eventually we found the building but it was closed! By this point our flight was supposed to be taking off in just over an hour. A little security guard came over to us and indicated that the staff would be there in 20 minutes...i must admit at this point we started to worry. Anyway we needn't worry as after this everything went smoothly and we landed in Coca on time and was met by our driver Marco. The journey in his truck was long and hot but after 4 1/2 hours we finally arrived at the motorized canoe which took us 2 hours down river to our lodge.
The lodge was basic but bearable, but we wasn't ready for it to be completely open so absolutely everything could get in. Within minutes of being there one of the girls was screaming as she had a baby tarantula in her shoe! Anyway that was the least of our worries because we both got very sick Darren the night we got there and for the following day and me for the rest. The short time we was were feeling ok we joined in the activities, went Piranha fishing, Cayman watching, did a night hike and a 3 hour daytime hike which i spent most of trying to stop myself vomitting. We are not sure what made us so ill, we think probably food poisioning but we still aren't feeling 100% now.
All in all it was not a great trip and even the activities we could do we felt disappointed with as we didn't see very much wildlife, a few monkeys in the distance, lots of spiders, bugs and Cayman's but i guess we'd been spoiled in Galapagos!
