Banos
After our troublesome time in the jungle we decided we needed some TLC and tranquility so a couple of buses and 5 hours later we arrived at the relaxing spa town of Banos. Banos is high in the Ecuadorian Andes and is hemmed in by green mountains and beautiful waterfalls. On our journey there we were blown away by how amazing the scenery was, just what the doctor ordered!! Our hostel felt like an hotel with the most picturesque views from our room!
During our few days in Banos we decided not to do much as we were still not feeling great so we spent our time strolling around town, had lunch in the square, enjoyed a wonderful massage and even built up the energy to trek to the top of one of the nearby mountains which was much more difficult than first expected taking us a good 3 1/2 hours in the blazing heat! Still, it was good experience for our Inca trail trek which we have in a couple of weeks. Once at the summit we treated ourselves to a nice lunch in a posh spa resort (Luna Runtun) that had a restaurant with wonderful views.
We were very lucky to have been in Banos for the foundation of the city celebrations which involved parades through the streets and live traditional music. A nice experience!!!
Before leaving we made sure we joined the locals and took a dip in the towns hot springs which are right next to a waterfull....arhhhh heaven.
Banos was a nice break away from the smelly and unsafe Quito. On our return by local bus, we had our first personal experience of lowlifes trying to get into our bags! Fortunately, we were quick to act and they did not get away with anything! SCUM!
Quito beware!
